Why M.D.S

Retrofit that lasts.

Retrofit insulation is where most older properties go wrong. Wrap a Victorian wall in plastic sheet and the wall stays wet and the timber rots. Done properly, with breathable systems and the right detailing, you get warmer rooms, lower bills and a healthy building. Done badly, you get condensation behind the plasterboard.

Most of my work comes from word of mouth. Lincoln is a small enough city that bad jobs follow you around, so I treat every property as if my reputation depends on it. Because it does.

Every quote is line-by-line and fixed. You see the cost of every stage and every material before I lift a tool. No sliding scope, no surprise variations.

What's included

How I do retrofit.

The detail, the materials, the sequencing. Six things that separate work that lasts from work that does not.

01 · Retrofit

Underfloor insulation

Kingspan or mineral wool between joists with breathable membrane, supported on netting. Significant heat-loss reduction in any older property.

02 · Retrofit

Internal wall insulation

Breathable wood-fibre or PIR systems where appropriate. Detailing at floor and ceiling junctions to avoid condensation traps.

03 · Retrofit

Loft insulation top-ups

Rolled mineral wool up to current standards, ventilation maintained, eaves not blocked. Boarded loft solutions where you need storage.

04 · Retrofit

Draught-proofing

Sash window brushes, door seals, floor edge sealing. The cheapest pound you can spend on a heating bill.

05 · Retrofit

Breathability assessed

Every wall assessed for moisture risk before specifying a system. Wrong insulation is worse than no insulation.

06 · Retrofit

Detailed properly

Junctions, penetrations, services taped and sealed. The performance is in the detailing, not just the product.

Common questions

Retrofit, asked.

Will internal wall insulation cause damp?
It can, if specified wrong. Non-breathable systems on solid Victorian walls trap moisture against the inner face and rot timbers. Breathable systems with proper detailing work fine. I assess before I specify.
What insulation is best for underfloor in a period property?
Usually 100mm Kingspan or PIR between joists, supported on netting, with breathable membrane on top. Mineral wool is cheaper and breathable but compresses. The right choice depends on the floor build-up.
How much will I save on heating?
It depends, but underfloor insulation alone can knock 10 to 15 percent off a heating bill in a typical pre-1930 terrace. Adding loft top-up and draught-proofing on top often gets to 25 percent.
Are there grants for retrofit?
There are schemes that come and go. ECO-funded options are often subject to income or property assessments. I can point you at the current schemes worth applying for, but I do not run them as a Trustmark installer.
